A Day Trip to Guatavita

Milena takes us out of Bogotá
1

I met Milena at her apartment at 8am. Taking her car, we picked up Cesar and Patrícia, and then Paula, before heading out of Bogotá to see the surrounding countryside.

The first stop was for a late breakfast in Sesquilé, where we had a typical dish called Changua, which they all said was an aquired taste. It’s a soup of hot milk with pieces of bread in it, along with poached eggs, cilantro, and garlic. I enjoyed it, though I’m not sure I’m in a hurry to have it again.

We then went to the little tourist town of Guatavita, which is next to the Tominé reservoir, one of the main water supplies of nearby Bogotá. After walking around, with me trying unsucessfully to get my four fellow travelers to ride the rentable horses around for a bit so I could get some good video for you, we made our way back to the car.

The countryside all around the reservoir is stunning. Lush, and green, it reminded me of New Zealand.

I had to turn the camera back on when I saw the following -

After driving for a bit we stopped near what I think was Guasca, where we had a hearty lunch. From there we drove a short way to the town of Sopó, famous for their Alpina brand of dairy products, in search of yogurt. However the lines in the retail “cabaña” were too long, and we decided to get back on the road. Eventually we found a very nice place that seemingly only sold sweets and desserts. After eating, we got back on the highway and finished our trip in the dark, in Bogotá.

Thanks to all of my fellow travelers, and especially Milena, for making me feel like a special “invitado”.
