Yes, my time in Cartagena feels so different to my experiences in both Lima and Bogotá. In both of those cities I didn't feel like an outsider because of my friendships with people who started out as language partners. For me its the best (only?) way to travel. If I remember right, you have a decent level of spanish. Get on www.conversationexchange.com, find a language partner in a country/city you're interested in, and build up some connections!

Next year, in addition to returning to visit my friends, I'd like to go to Medellin, so I'm going to get online this summer and try to make some connections there.

A human zoo. . . What an idea. Someone should buy that idea from you. Being noticed as an outsider is the only time being an outsider is a bummer, this is compounded when you are grouped with a victim class like "tourists" (Assuming they're not CIA). My biggest problem with visiting other places is that other people had to have the same idea. I also have little principle on the matter as my experience traveling is limited. Glad to see you're living it up. 🎉 Enjoy the warmth while you can.
